Children's Rights and AI

Discover current projects and related resources developed by the Global Campus headquarters and its regional hubs, in collaboration with Right Livelihood.

The Global Campus is implementing a range of projects exploring a human rights and child rights based approach to AI, examining the risks and opportunities AI presents for children and their rights.

This project aims to build capacity on a Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) to Artificial Intelligence (AI) for diverse audiences. It will strengthen connections between human rights and AI advocates, with a strong emphasis on practical learning through case studies and hands-on activities. Key outputs include a MOOC designed for a general audience to explore the human rights impact of AI, a set of microlearning tools, and a podcast series.

Designed with and for young people, this Toolkit highlights the opportunities—not just the risks—of Artificial Intelligence in advancing human rights. It is structured across three key settings: i) The Workplace – Targeted at human rights activists and defenders, especially youth-led CSOs/NGOs, this layer supports the use of AI for monitoring human rights compliance and violations, and for advocacy. ii) Higher Education Classrooms – Tailored for Global Campus students, this component integrates AI into academic learning to strengthen human rights literacy and applied understanding. iii) High School Settings – Aimed at youth aged 15–18, this layer empowers students to explore how AI can support the realization of their rights in everyday life.

This project aims to strengthen the capacity of the academic community across seven Asia-Pacific countries—Australia, Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, and Thailand—to teach and research Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the framework of human rights education. It adopts a dual-focus approach: i) Understanding impact: Identifying the most pressing concerns related to AI and assessing how these issues affect communities across the region; ii) Empowering educators: Enhancing academic capacity by improving teaching resources, curriculum design, and faculty development to enable meaningful engagement with AI and human rights.

This project seeks to enhance the capacity of seven Arab universities participating in the Global Campus Arab World to engage academically with the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a particular focus on its intersection with children’s rights—especially the right to education. In a region where socio-political unrest, armed conflict, and economic challenges have severely disrupted educational systems, understanding the current and future impact of AI on education is crucial. The project’s goal is to establish a strong regional network of universities equipped with the knowledge and tools to understand and engage with the challenges and opportunities of AI technology—positioning them as key voices in the Arab World on promoting equitable access to education and protecting children’s rights in the digital age.

This primer provides a comprehensive yet accessible guide to essential cybersecurity measures, including secure communication, data protection, and safe browsing techniques. It covers the basics of digital hygiene, step-by-step instructions on using encryption and VPNs, and strategies to counter common threats like phishing and malware. By enhancing activists’ understanding of digital security, “CyberGuard” aims to safeguard their vital work against digital threats.
