Call for applications: AI for Human Rights (AI4HR) peer-learning programme for youth-focused organisations

Is your organisation curious about what AI could do for your human rights work, but unsure where to start? Between January and early July 2027, AI4HR will conduct a peer-learning programme in English, where we will pair five youth-focused human rights organisations with NGOs that already use AI in their work.

Together, they will explore what is useful, where the risks are and what is realistic in terms of applying AI for each context.

About AI4HR

AI4HR is a five-year research project (2024-2029), supported by the Global Campus of Human Rights and the Right Livelihood partnership. The overall purpose of the project is to develop an AI for Human Rights Toolkit, which will be designed with, and for, young people. The Toolkit will highlight the opportunities—not just the risks—of AI in advancing human rights. It will be structured across three key settings: (1) The Workplace; (2) The Higher Ed Classroom; (3) The High School Setting. In the first stage, we did a mapping of human rights organisations and conducted interviews about how they already use AI, including for monitoring, documenting violations, advocacy and accountability. The peer-learning programme is the next step and builds on what we have heard and analysed.

What the peer-learning programme is

Each participating youth organisation will be matched with an AI expert NGO that over six months will share its experience, offer practical guidance and help you work out how AI could support your priorities. You decide what to focus on, whether that is documenting violations, analysing information, strengthening advocacy or something else. Most of the work will take place online with webinars and workshops being held approximately once a month. The AI expert will also visit your organisation in person once during spring 2027 for more hands-on support.

In addition, all participating organisations will take part in a workshop in Venice, Italy, on 25-26 February 2027 to exchange experiences, build networks and discuss the opportunities and challenges of using AI for human rights. We will provide funding for all expenses connected to flights and accommodation in Venice.

Who can apply

We are looking for youth-focused human rights organisations, meaning organisations that are youth-led or work mainly with and for young people (aged 15 years old and above). You do not need previous experience with AI as curiosity and an idea of what you want to learn and where to apply matter more. We particularly welcome applications from organisations in the Global Majority countries.

How to apply

To apply, you need to fill in the following Microsoft Form: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/BCtuEjHFkG

The deadline for filling in the Microsoft Form is the 4th November.

In your application you need to provide:

  • A short description of your organisation and its work with young people with a link to your website/social media;
  • What you hope to learn or test with AI in this programme, and why it matters to your work;
  • The name(s) and CV(s) of 1-2 representatives from the organisation that will be available and ready to commit to a 6-month programme in English, as well as one visit of an AI expert and an in-person visit a workshop in Venice.

While we do not mind AI usage for language or structure refinement in applications, we want to hear your genuine thoughts, so we would appreciate a human touch to the application.

Fair treatment

All applications will be assessed transparently and consistently against the same criteria, ensuring equal treatment and non-discrimination. Selection will consider whether the organisation is youth-led or works primarily with and for young people, the relevance of its human rights work, the clarity of its proposed learning goals, and its capacity and commitment to participate throughout the six-month programme. Selection decisions and their rationale will be documented to ensure accountability, while all programme-related expenses will be managed transparently and in accordance with the project’s financial procedures.

Should you have any questions, please pose them to Mariia Lesina, AI4HR Layer 1 WP2 Project coordinator at aiforhrlayer1@gchumanrights.org

Looking forward to your application!
