Our Human Future with AI: A New E-Package Explores Artificial Intelligence Through a Human Rights Lens

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how we live, learn, work and connect. But how can we ensure that its development and use remain grounded in human rights?

A new E-Package on a Human Rights-Based Approach to Artificial Intelligence, developed by the Global Campus of Human Rights in partnership with the Danish Institute for Human Rights, the Human Rights Centre at Queen’s University Belfast and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, offers a set of free educational resources to explore this question. The project is part of our longstanding collaboration with Right Livelihood.

Bringing together three complementary learning formats – a MOOC, a six-part microlearning series and the new podcast series To the Righthouse: Our Human Future with AI – the E-Package explores both the opportunities and human rights risks associated with AI. At its core is a Human Rights-Based Approach (HBRA) built around five interconnected principles: Participation, Accountability, Non-discrimination and Equality, Empowerment and Legality.

The MOOC explores the profound impact AI can have on human rights, both positively and negatively, by presenting new challenges for individuals, communities and society. Through diverse case studies and examples from the field, it illustrates how adopting a Human Rights-Based Approach and its principles can help navigate both the promise and perils of AI.

The microlearning series, hosted at the Learning Hub of the Danish Institute for Human Rights, puts these principles into practice through concrete dilemmas, including AI-driven social media, hate speech, discrimination in public services, AI companions and the EU AI Act. Each microlearning uses one principle to help identify human rights risks, ask relevant questions and guide responsible action.

The podcast series brings together experts and practitioners to examine how AI is affecting democracy, global inequalities, education and the rights of children and young people. Hosted by Thérèse Murphy, the five-episode series features conversations with, among others, Right Livelihood Laureate Audrey Tang, as well as youth voices Farah Gul Rahuja and Sam Hiner, exploring why meaningful participation by younger generations is essential to conversations about the future of AI.

The E-Package is designed for different audiences and levels of engagement: whether exploring the subject for the first time, looking for practical tools to apply a human rights-based approach, or engaging with expert perspectives through the podcast. Explore the MOOC, discover the microlearning series and listen to Our Human Future with AI – and join the conversation about how we can shape an AI-enabled future with human rights at its centre.
