Harness the power of the written word for profound social change

Overview

Designed for those eager to enrich their craft and embark on the journey of writing a book or long form work, this course is for prospective authors who are keen on writing non-fiction narrative on a variety of human rights topics: from climate justice to gender equality; from racial justice to social justice at large.

Over the span of ten weeks, our online programme will provide a collaborative environment that celebrates community, diversity and inclusivity. The course, open to participants from diverse backgrounds, nationalities and experiences, is tailored to resonate with all those who seek to shine a light on the experiences of those who are often marginalised, to honour their inherent dignity, and to drive our society towards greater understanding and positive change. We will actively encourage creative brainstorming and support sharing feedback among participants.

About Authoring Justice

The course aims to equip you with the knowledge, skills, space and time to:

  • learn about the principles of narrative non-fiction writing
  • explore ethical issues to consider throughout the writing journey
  • gain deeper understanding of the whole writing and publishing process through expert tips and examples
  • hone your own writing approach, style and methods
  • contribute to creative brainstorming and peer-to-peer support

Under the guidance of Professor Andrew Leon Hanna, author of 25 Million Sparks: The Untold Story of Refugee Entrepreneurs (Cambridge University Press), you will embark on a transformative journey, learning about the principles of narrative non-fiction writing, developing your own short assignments and final Capstone Project (~2,000-word piece), and receiving tailored personal feedback to nurture your ideas.

Drawing inspiration from live webinars with renowned authors and publishers – who will share their tactical wisdom, firsthand experiences and writing tips – you will reinforce your writing skills and methods while also getting practical advice on navigating the whole path from the first spark to publication.

The course encompasses 5 modules:

    1. Selecting a writing topic
    2. Narrative non-fiction
    3. Navigating the writing process
    4. Ethical considerations
    5. Getting published

It foresees approximately 30 hours of active learning with readings, videos, peer discussions and 3 practical writing exercises:

    1. What makes you come alive (200-250 words on the human rights area that you feel most enlivened to change)
    2. Synopsis (200-250 words synopsis of your Capstone Project)
    3. Capstone Project (~2000 words long form article or part of a book)

The final session will be devoted to celebrating the class achievements through readings of excerpts from the Capstone Projects.
