Five-Week On-line Seminar Cycle Explored Key Human Rights Challenges in Belize

In October and November, the Global Campus and the University of Belize ran a series of online seminars, engaging 52 participants from academia and civil society. The programme concluded with an in-person networking event, where participants received certificates and the University President was recognised with an appreciation certificate for the institution’s support of human rights education.

In the framework of the partnership between the Global Campus of Human Rights and the University of Belize, an initiative dedicated to strengthening human rights education, research, and collaboration in the country, the two institutions successfully launched “Your Rights, Your World: Exploring Human Rights Glocal Challenges”, an online seminar cycle held from mid-October to November 2025. The activity is one of the key components of the wider project aimed at empowering Belizean students, academics, and professionals through innovative and accessible learning opportunities.

Made possible thanks to the EU support and in coordination with the GC Latin-America & Caribbean programme based at San Martin University (Buenos Aires), the seminar cycle offered participants a unique opportunity to deepen the understanding of some of today’s most urgent human rights challenges. Over five weeks, regional international experts guided the audience through an exploration of human rights in the digital ecosystem, the relationship between law enforcement and human rights, the protection of children’s rights, the rights of indigenous peoples, as well as the interrelation between human rights and climate justice. Each session paired a focused presentation with an interactive Q&A, allowing participants to exchange ideas and reflect on how global trends connect to the Belizean and wider Caribbean context.

To ensure that all selected participants could best benefit from the experience, the programme included a preparatory “Week 0,” offering self-paced e-learning materials designed to introduce the fundamentals of human rights to those without a prior background.

Delivered by Wiebke Lamer, Julio José Rojas Baez, Mary Beloff, Fernanda Frizzo Bragato and Zoi Aliozi, the synchronous online sessions brought together diverse perspectives from across the Global Campus network. The enthusiasm and active participation throughout the cycle confirmed the strong interest in human rights education within the Belizean community, with 52 participants registered, 23 completing the full cycle, and an overall evaluation of 4.0 out of 5 across the five seminars.

On 26 November, the University of Belize hosted an in-person award ceremony featuring welcome remarks by Abbie Godoy, EU–UB Human Rights Project Coordinator, and addresses from Vincent Palacio, President of the University of Belize, and Elizabeth Lanzi Mazzocchini, representing the European Union. Adriano Remiddi, Head of Capacity Development at the Global Campus of Human Rights, also spoke and presented a certificate of appreciation to the University President in recognition of the institution’s commitment to developing human rights education. Certificates of completion were then conferred to participants who completed the full cycle.

The Global Campus of Human Rights and the University of Belize will continue to collaborate closely, further supporting the transformative role that higher education can play in promoting human rights, democratic values, and sustainable development, locally and globally.
